The nose is often called the gateway to the head. According to Ayurveda, the nasal passages are not just for breathing—they are the primary channel to deliver vital energy (Prana) and nourishment to the brain and senses. Blocked sinuses, recurrent headaches, allergies, or stress can all be traced back to imbalances in this vital region.
One of the most powerful Ayurvedic treatments for such conditions is Nasya Karma. This therapy involves the gentle administration of medicated oils, ghee, or herbal juices into the nasal passages under professional supervision. It is a cornerstone of Panchakarma, the classical detox system of Ayurveda.
At Dr. Jasna’s Ayurveda Clinic, Nasya therapy has helped countless patients find lasting relief from chronic sinusitis, migraines, allergies, and even hair fall—by addressing root causes naturally.
The term Nasya comes from Sanskrit “Nasa” meaning nose. It is the therapeutic practice of instilling herbal preparations into the nostrils.
Nasya is more than a nasal treatment—it is a holistic therapy that balances doshas, clears accumulated toxins, strengthens sensory organs, and promotes mental clarity.
Classical texts describe five main types of Nasya, each serving different purposes:
Navana Nasya (Decoction/Oil Nasya)
Instillation of medicated oils or herbal decoctions.
Used for chronic headaches, migraines, sinus issues, and neurological disorders.
Avapeeda Nasya (Herbal Juice Nasya)
Herbal extracts are instilled to expel Kapha and toxins.
Effective for sinus congestion and allergies.
Pradhamana Nasya (Powder Nasya)
Medicated powders are blown into nostrils.
Indicated in neurological conditions, epilepsy, and stubborn sinus blockages.
Pratimarsha Nasya (Daily Gentle Nasya)
Small amounts of oil/ghee used daily for preventive care.
Maintains nasal moisture, prevents infections, enhances memory, strengthens hair.
Dhuma Nasya (Medicated Smoke Therapy)
Inhalation of herbal smoke.
Used for cough, respiratory issues, and head-related disorders.
At our clinic, the type of Nasya is selected based on the patient’s condition, dosha imbalance, and overall health.
A session of Nasya therapy typically lasts 20–30 minutes:
The patient relaxes on a therapy table.
Gentle massage (Abhyanga) of the head, face, and neck is done with warm oil.
Mild steam therapy (Swedana) is applied to loosen accumulated Kapha and open channels.
The patient lies with the head slightly tilted back.
Warm medicated oil/herbal preparation is instilled drop by drop into each nostril.
The patient inhales gently while the therapist massages the nose and forehead to aid absorption.
The patient spits out excess oil and avoids cold air or strain immediately after therapy.
Rest and light diet are recommended.
